Newsletter BACK TO BRAND – The Untamed Spirit of Creativity

October 30, 2025

School is back in session in North America and most part of the world, and with it comes the familiar rhythm of order and routine. It means trading three months of glorious disorder for the polish of the classroom. Summer gave them permission to shake off the formality that school systems spend nine months instilling. During those weeks, they were loose, loud, and utterly themselves. Messy, unpredictable, unburdened by rules or expectations, they were feral in the best possible way. Teachers may see chaos; others may see the purest expression of individuality. Once structure takes hold, those raw edges begin to smooth out. Summer, then, is not just a season, it is a state of being creativity unbound, audacity unfiltered, and individuality unapologetic.

Similarly, imagine brands could hold on to that feral, fearless energy all year long. Imagine if they never surrendered their wild edges to the bell of conformity. That carefree, unpolished spirit is precisely what makes the most memorable brands stand out. The ones that endure are never those who simply follow category norms. They are the brands that arrive raw, real, and unmistakably themselves.

Authenticity at that level does more than connect, it conveys. While most brands chase trends, a select few define them.

As the world resets into autumn routines, the challenge is clear: celebrate and sustain the brands that keep their “summer break selves” alive, the ones who refuse to conform, and in doing so, set the pace for everyone else.

Is your brand authentic, unfiltered? Push the boundaries of your brand, here’s a little help:

1. Lead with What You Believe, Not What Is Safe

“The strongest brands don’t dilute their values for the comfort of blending in. They stand up, speak out, and invite people to rally around them”.

Patagonia is one of the most consistent examples of this in action. From suing the U.S. government over the protection of public lands, to the audacious “Vote the Assholes Out” clothing tags, Patagonia has shown that conviction creates community. They’ve transformed customers into fans and given themselves a cultural voice far louder than their market share.

Patagonia is the kid at summer camp who refuses to colour inside the lines, and somehow, everyone wants to join their game.

2. Turn Up the Edges, Not the Polish

“People are drawn to what feels raw and real, even when it creates tension. Smooth and perfect fades into the background; rough and true gets remembered”.

Jack Daniel’s has built an entire legacy on that truth. It never tried to look refined or glossy. Instead, it leaned hard into its Tennessee roots, its black-label grit, and the enduring mythos of a whiskey that feels at home in a roadside bar as much as on a global stage.

It’s Make It Count campaign captured this ethos perfectly: a celebration of bold, imperfect, live-it-your-way choices. Jack Daniel’s didn’t wait for permission to be authentic, it simply was. Think of it as the summer kid who climbs trees upside down and comes back laughing while everyone else is stuck on the swing set.

3. Be the Pace Setter, Not the Follower

“In the crowded marketplace, imitation is invisibility. Brands that chase popularity vanish into the noise. But those who set the moment, they last”.

Lume did exactly this. While personal care marketing stayed trapped in sanitized tropes, Lume leaned into humour, oversharing, and unapologetic honesty about topics most brands wouldn’t touch. Its ads spoke openly about odour “anywhere on the body,” making the brand impossible to ignore. By breaking taboos, Lume didn’t just sell products. It redefined the category and forced competitors to play catch-up. Lume is the summer kid who brings a water gun to dodgeball, and suddenly everyone is rethinking the rules.

Carrying Summer into Every Season

As kids all over the world, swap their fearless summer selves for the structure of school, we are reminded that brands face the same trade-off. It’s tempting to smooth the edges, follow the rules, and blend in. But the gamechanger lies in the opposite: in holding on to that carefree, untamed spirit. Because when creativity runs wild, bold impulses lead, and authenticity becomes the strategy, a brand is not just seen. It is felt.

Your brand’s most authentic, daring, and wild self should never be a fleeting moment in time. It should be how you show up every single day.

So, ask yourself:

“Does your brand still run wild like its summer, or has it been tamed by the bell”?

Long live your brand’s summer break self.

At Grit & Pearl, we partner with brands to keep their edges sharp, their voices unfiltered, and their presence unforgettable. Because conformity is comfortable, but audacity is iconic.
